If you’re registering as self-employed for the first time, you can easily follow these step-by-step instructions:
- Create an HMRC online account (press the link) and register online.
- You’ll be assigned a user ID.
- Log back into your HMRC online account and select “add a tax,” then choose “Self Assessment.”
- Select “Sole Trader” from the options of individual, sole trader, partnership, or trust.
- Enter the date when you started your self-employment.
- Provide additional details, including your National Insurance Number
- Describe the nature of your work, such as “security guard,” “Uber driver,” or “freelance designer.”
- Review your information and click “submit.”
- You’ll receive a letter by mail that includes your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number.
- Within 10 working days, you’ll receive another letter that includes an activation code required to activate your UTR.
